What does 白嫖 mean?

白嫖 takes the verb 嫖 (visiting a brothel) and adds 白 (free of charge): enjoying something without paying, from gacha games you never top up to streams you never tip to premium articles you read through mirrors. The 白嫖党 (“freeloader party”) wear the label with pride — next to 氪金 (paying), it’s the other national sport. Creators groan about them (“白嫖怪, 连个赞都不点”), but every 白嫖 master’s defense is the same: exposure is payment enough.

Where does 白嫖 come from?

白嫖 circulated in northeastern dialect long before the internet — “白嫖一次” meant getting the service without paying for it. The meme exploded around 2018 when China’s paid-content era arrived en masse: video memberships, knowledge courses, paid columns, gacha games. The collision of “everything wants your money” with “why would I pay?” minted 白嫖 as the default stance of the free-riding internet masses, and it’s been expanding ever since into every paid corner of digital life.
