What does 沙发 mean?

Forums numbered their replies, and the first one was 一楼, the first floor. Whoever posted it got to claim the sofa: the comfy seat, taken while everyone else is still standing. 抢沙发, grabbing the sofa, became a tiny race with no prize except being early, and its culture still runs on the same instinct as 潜水, but backwards: one person sprinting to speak first while a hundred others watch without a word. The rankings continue below the sofa. Second reply is a 板凳, a wooden stool, and by the third you are considered to be sitting on the floor.

Where does 沙发 come from?

The word comes from the forum era of the early 2000s, and nobody can prove where exactly it started. One popular story traces it to the 碧海银沙 forums, another claims it is a garbled borrowing of the English “so fast”, and a third says the first replier just pictured sinking into a couch. Whatever the truth, by the mid-2000s 沙发 was standard on every message board, and it survived the jump to social media, where the same race restarts under every Weibo post and WeChat article.

How to use 沙发

  • 帖子刚发出去十秒,一楼已经被人占了,回复只有两个字:沙发。
Tiězi gāng fā chūqù shí miǎo, yī lóu yǐjīng bèi rén zhàn le, huífù zhǐ yǒu liǎng gè zì: shāfā.
Ten seconds after the post went up, the first floor was already gone. The reply was two characters: sofa.
  • 老板发通知,我手快抢到沙发,结果同事私聊我:你倒是挺闲。
Lǎobǎn fā tōngzhī, wǒ shǒu kuài qiǎng dào shāfā, jiéguǒ tóngshì sīliáo wǒ: nǐ dào shì tǐng xián.
The boss posted an announcement and I was quick enough to grab the sofa. A colleague then messaged me privately: someone has time on their hands.
