What does 包的 mean?

包的 is an upbeat way of saying 'definitely', 'leave it to me' or 'trust me on this'. It can stand alone as a reply ('包的!') or slot into the pattern 包××的, meaning 'guaranteed ××': 包赢的 ('guaranteed win'), 包好吃的 ('guaranteed tasty'). The tone is cheerful and a little cocky, and people often say it half-jokingly, fully aware the guarantee might not hold. English equivalents would be 'trust', 'no cap' or 'it's a lock'.

Where does 包的 come from?

包 in the sense of 'to guarantee' already existed in Chinese, including several regional dialects. It became a meme in 2024 when a game streamer used 包的 and 包××的 constantly as catchphrases and viewers started copying them. From there it spread well beyond gaming and was included in 语言文字周报's 2024 top ten buzzwords list.
