What does no cap mean?
No cap is a promise that you are telling the truth. It slides into a sentence as a parenthetical, or stands alone as a reply when someone doubts you. Its opposite, capping, accuses someone of lying, and calling something cap means calling it fake. The pair travels together everywhere from group chats to sports interviews.
Where does no cap come from?
Cap for a lie and no cap for the truth come out of Southern US rap, where artists like Young Thug and Future used them on records in the mid-2010s. The phrases crossed into general internet speech around 2019, helped by songs titled No Cap and by viral clips of athletes and streamers using them unironically.
