What does 问号 mean?
问号 in game chat is never a genuine question. A single “?” pings confusion (“what just happened?”); “???” after your teammate’s throw is a full rebuttal of their life choices; and the enemy’s “?” in all chat after you outplay them is salt, pure and simple. In Dota 2 the “?” ping — a hero portrait silently asking — became performance art for psychological warfare, and Chinese servers turned it into a dialect: one ? is confusion, three is contempt, a full row is a funeral.
Where does 问号 come from?
The meme’s canonical form comes from Dota 2 around 2017: the “?” quick-chat ping, spammed by Chinese players on local servers until it crossed over to the international client and became the game’s universal emote of doubt. Outside Dota it had already lived for years in QQ groups and forums as ???, and today it’s standard equipment in any lobby where Chinese players meet — one character that needs no translation.
