What does 我太难了 mean?

我太难了 works for exams, rent, breakups or a cracked phone screen: a complaint and a joke in one breath. In 2019 it covered Chinese social media. A second wave came when people replaced 难 with the mahjong tile 南, which sounds identical, writing 我太南了 and photographing four tiles spelling out the phrase. The tone is theatrical exhaustion rather than real despair. If a friend posts it, they are fishing for laughs and likes, not advice.

Where does 我太难了 come from?

The line travelled from Kuaishou videos in mid-2019, where it arrived over a mournful soundtrack as 我太难了,老铁,最近我压力很大 (I have been under so much pressure lately, bro). Douyin turned it into skits, the mahjong variant followed in the second half of the year, and in December 《咬文嚼字》 added 我太难/南了 to its annual top-ten list of Chinese buzzwords. Shops started selling phone cases and cushions shaped like the tile 南.
