What does 城巴佬 mean?
城巴佬 turns the old insult 乡巴佬 ("country bumpkin") on its head: now it is the city folks who look clueless. It describes urbanites who can't tell crops apart, don't recognize farm tools, or get wildly excited about digging potatoes. Most of the time it is self-mocking ("I'm such a 城巴佬") or friendly teasing from rural creators toward their city viewers, not a real put-down. It often pairs with the trend of city tourists flocking to villages, farms and rural markets.
Where does 城巴佬 come from?
It took off in 2025 through Douyin challenges in which rural creators showed off crops or tools and playfully asked city viewers whether they could identify them (along the lines of "城巴佬, ever seen this much land?"). The term kept trending into 2026 alongside stories of city tourists flocking to farms and village markets. No single original video has been reliably identified.
