What does 舔狗 mean?

A 舔狗 keeps giving attention to someone who does not want it back: meals, gifts, midnight replies, favors nobody asked for. The word mocks the imbalance rather than the affection itself, and it is blunt enough that being called one stings. The famous line 舔狗舔到最后一无所有, roughly that the licker ends up with nothing, spread as both warning and punchline. English internet culture has a word for something similar in simp, and like simp it doubles as a half-joking insult people also use on themselves.

Where does 舔狗 come from?

The word took shape on Baidu Tieba forums, where 舔 (to lick) already described groveling for someone's attention. It went wide in 2018, when the line 舔狗舔到最后一无所有 started circulating as screenshots, and explainers such as the one 海峡网 ran on October 25, 2018 showed how mainstream the word had become.
