What does 致敬 mean?
致敬 is an ordinary word for 'pay tribute', but on Bilibili it became the go-to bullet comment (弹幕) whenever a video shows something genuinely admirable. Typical moments include rescuers at work, veterans, doctors, or ordinary people who stay positive through hardship. When a scene like that appears, the screen fills with 致敬 scrolling across, like a crowd standing up to applaud. Unlike most internet slang it is earnest, not ironic, which is a big part of why it stood out. Its everyday counterpart in English would be 'Respect' or 'Salute' in the comments.
Where does 致敬 come from?
Bilibili named 致敬 its Bullet Comment of the Year for 2025. According to the platform, it was sent more than 22 million times that year by over 4.5 million users, about 80% of them born after 2000. Bilibili said the video with the most 致敬 comments showed a creator cleaning a martyrs' cemetery at a veteran's request. The previous year's winner was 接.
