What does 杯具 mean?

Type 杯具 into a chat window and you have not ordered a tea service. You have pronounced 悲剧, the word for tragedy, with the wrong characters on purpose, because 杯具 sounds exactly the same. Jokes grew the metaphor into furniture: 人生就像一个茶几,上面摆满了杯具, life is like a tea table and every cup on it is a small misfortune. The tone is gentle. This is what you say when the bus pulls away without you, when the bubble tea lid pops off inside your bag, when the deadline moves up two days. A whole dinner service followed, with 餐具 standing in for 惨剧 (catastrophe), 洗具 for 喜剧 (comedy) and 茶具 for 差距 (gap).

Where does 杯具 come from?

The gag surfaced in the second half of 2009 and rolled out of 百度贴吧 and 豆瓣 into the wider Chinese web. That December, as newspapers drew up their year-end word lists, outlets traced the tea table line to a habit of the scholar 易中天, who liked explaining life through household objects in his televised lectures. 杯具 rode through the winter on the publicity, and by early 2010 it was showing up in advertising and TV captions, already slightly dated and loved for it.
