What does 大神 mean?
大神 means “great god,” and it's the highest compliment Chinese internet gives a skilled person. In games, the 大神 is the carry who 1v5s while you watch; on forums, the 大神 is the user whose detailed answer solves what everyone else gave up on (大神在民间 — “the gods walk among us”). Students call top scorers 学神; programmers call legendary devs 技术大神. The word drips with half-joking worship: replies pile up with 膝盖已献上 (“I offer my knees”), and asking a 大神 for help starts with 大神求带. It sits at the top of a clear ladder: 大神 > 高手 (expert) > 普通玩家 (average) > 菜鸟 (noob) — and every 菜鸟 dreams of one day being called 大神.
Where does 大神 come from?
大神 originally referred to deities and folk-religion masters in Chinese, but the internet repurposed it in the 2000s on BBS forums like Tianya and Mop, where users anointed legendary posters. Gaming gave it mass popularity in the 2010s: esports stars and mysterious solo-queue monsters were 大神, and their highlight reels racked up millions of “膝盖已献上” comments. The title expanded to any field with recognizable mastery — from street-food chefs to gaokao perfect scorers — becoming the go-to word for “legend” in Chinese internet speech.
