What does 小学生 mean?

小学生 is rarely about age — it’s about behavior. The teammate who feeds and blames others, rages in chat, quits at ten minutes, plays like 菜鸟 but argues like a pro: that’s a 小学生. The terror is seasonal: “小学生放假了” (“the elementary kids are on break”) announces that school holidays have flooded matchmaking, and veterans avoid ranked accordingly. On international servers CN players just type “xxs” and their compatriots wince in recognition.

Where does 小学生 come from?

The insult has roots in early-2000s forum culture, where 小学生 marked clueless newbies straight out of (metaphorical) primary school. It became gaming’s favorite label with the 2013 League of Legends boom in China, when media stories about kids skipping homework for ranked gave the stereotype its modern shape — and every winter and summer holiday since, ranked queues have blamed their losses on the school calendar.
