What does 上分 mean?
上分 means earning points in ranked competitive games, climbing from Bronze to Silver, Diamond to Master. It carries the grind mentality: 上分车队 is a “climbing squad” of skilled strangers who queue together to win efficiently. The term escaped gaming into everyday irony, where any measurable life improvement is “scoring points”: a shiny resume 简历上分, pleasing your mother-in-law 丈母娘上分, even a gym selfie for social-media credit 朋友圈上分. It pairs naturally with its opposite, 掉分 (losing points) — a bad game 掉分, a disastrous date also 掉分. The underlying joke is that modern life is just one big ranked ladder with no off-season.
Where does 上分 come from?
Ranked ladders arrived in China with the rise of League of Legends around 2012 and went fully mainstream with 王者荣耀 (2015 onward), whose tier names — 青铜 Bronze, 王者 King — became household words. 上分 was the everyday verb for that climb. Around 2018–2019, as young Chinese joked about treating jobs, dating, and fitness like competitive ladders, 上分 followed 躺平 into general vocabulary: “not tonight, I'm off the ladder” became a whole mood.
